tennis talk
Tuesday, September 2, 2008
By Neil Schlecht

In a promotional bit before the start of the US Open, boxing promoter Don King staged a pugilistic-styled “Grapple in the Apple” weigh-in of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.
Perhaps those two mild-mannered players weren’t the best choice for the event.
Wednesday afternoon’s matchup of sixth-seeded Scot Andy Murray, 21, and the 19-year-old Argentine Juan Martin del Potro, who’s riding a 23-match win streak, comes against the backdrop of a supposed feud that has piqued interest in an already anticipated encounter.
Del Potro and Murray, 16 months apart, have known each other since junior days, but it was their May match in Rome earlier this year that has the two of them, and others privy to their playing history, talking.
In a testy match, Del Potro allegedly launched a ball at the feisty Murray’s head. At a changeover at 5-4 in the second set, the two engaged in sideline trash-talking that the umpire tried in vain to extinguish. The sit-down squabble began with Murray complaining about the attempted beaning, to which Del Potro retorted, somewhat elliptically: “You and your mother, the same always.”
That set Murray off, incensed that the Argentine would dare invoke his mum: “If you ever speak about my mum again!” The umpire pleaded with both players “to save it ‘til later.” “That is unacceptable!” cried Murray.
Del Potro sat stoically, staring straight ahead.
Murray was asked whether there was some unfinished business between the two in his press conference, after defeating Stanislas Wawrinka to advance to the match against the 6-foot-6 Del Potro.
“I haven't spoken to him since, so whether there is or not, for me it's another tennis match,” said Murray. “When you get on the court you've got to put your emotions aside and get the job done.
"I've known him since we were really young," continued Murray. "I wasn't great friends with him before. I don't need to be friends with him now."
Murray won that first and only bout in a TKO. After Murray split sets with the big Argentine, Del Potro was forced to retire with an injury.
Looking forward to today's showdown, Murray said, “Whether I like Del Potro or not really doesn't make any difference. When you get on the tennis court it's another match, and you've got to win.”
For the curious, there’s charming YouTube video evidence of the incident (complete with amusing Eurosport commentators advocating for a throwdown then and there):
www.youtube.com/watch?v=muM-UQc_TnkRound 2 between these two combatants – technically the quarterfinals – is coming up Wednesday on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Be there!
.....................................................................................................................................................................
that was from www.usopen.org
i thought it was interesting.. didnt follow the rome masters back in may (exam time-blech!), so didnt know about the feud that was going on between these two players (great young players too may i add). the tempers match their young blood i guess..hehe.
btw, i missed the match totally -even the delayed telecast! it's a 12 hr-difference between ny and msia!!:( heard the commentators saying it was the best match they've seen in the us open so far..grr..
anyway, murray won over del potro already, and will be meeting nadal in the semis.
meantime, caught the williams sisters playing against each other (for the umpteenth time!), and this time serena won, but what a great score (7-6, 7-6) !!
hopefully can catch fedex vs muller while sahur later, then delayed cast of roddick vs djokovic (who actually announced that he's gonna stop imitating other players now, and become -gasp!-more serious!!!oh no..;))

holy-olympics!2

hya.. what a way to lose.. this is probably the worst ever game played by chong wei. lin dan maintained his usual greatness and confidence, with the additional advantage of the roaring home crowd of course.. but chong wei was obviously all nerves! he had a 50-50 chance to win the gold medal, like his coach-misbun said, he's got nuthin to lose(except mebbe 1 million ringgit?;)) .. but boy was that match crappy. no negaraku for us.. but at least we got a silver. chong wei still deserves a lotta credit for that. am watching the victory ceremony.. he looks really sad.. like he's been crying even. kesian. takpe chong wei. you still did good. malaysia got a silver thanks to you. we're still proud.
my brother texted me saying he was probably at fault too, cuz he had actually watched the game and therefore had probably jinxed it. he had apparently missed all events won by the malaysian shuttlers in the olympics so far, and those matches whose scores he managed to follow live online, were the ones we lost. oh, and the only time he did catch a glimpse of a live match on tv, it was when chong wei lost in the 2nd set against hyunil in the semis. so he was being a bit (silly &)superstitious tonight and didnt want to watch the game, but everyone else in malaysia were watching, including at the warung where he was having makan, so he just had to join in. hence the loss. hehe.
azizul hasni awang made it to the top 8 in the sprint event in cycling btw.. so malaysia still got hope.
the jamaican women just swept all 3 medals for the 100m race...with 1 gold and 2 silvers! no bronze even..they were dead even at 2nd place! and just yesterday, that usain bolt (very fitting last name) won another great gold medal for jamaica in the 100m men.
just realized too that the records (world & olympics) for the women's 100m made by the great flo-jo in 1988, still remain unbroken. wow.
another wow here...unsurpirising, but wow still.. is that human fish -michael phelps- he got his eight golds, just like he wanted. cool.
in tennis-the william sisters won their doubles gold, fedex had to settle for a doubles gold as well..and he seemed real happy with that, so that's good..and rafa continued his winning streak this year with his olympic gold.
looking forward to more finals ahead.

holy-olympics!
yay to choong wei and malaysia, for making it into the finals. the other semifinals are still playing at the moment, but looks to me choong wei will most probably face lin dan in the finals on sunday. so dunno.. we'll at least get the silver for sure, but getting gold will be super duper awesome for msia. come on choong wei, make us proud.. (if myr1 mil is not motivational enough for him, i dunno what is).
that penang guy-cheng whatshisname-almost made it to the semis in archery today.. dang!
athletics have also started today, looking forward to that, as well as synchronized swimming.
well, looks like my housemates will have to continue to bear with me for hogging the tv for these 2 weeks. hee...

time well wasted
saw the movie across the universe, musical based on the songs from the beatles. i loved it.. the songs are already great to begin with.. the story was also quite good.. the simple love story, the vietnam war, the songs, the actors.. cool. really took a liking to joe anderson, who totally looks like kurt cobain btw.
after watching this i immediately downloaded the soundtrack. nice.
also saw forgetting sarah marshall.. funny lah..worth mentioning that it shows male frontal nudity-instead of female for a change.... oh, and mila kunis is so pretty in this movie too.
lars and the real girl - interesting. liked it. ryan gosling is so cool. i prefer his acting in this one compared to half nelson.
half nelson - okay lah. biasa.
the bank job - liked it, especially because it was actually based on a real story. all that scandal. wow.
hairspray - not my kinda movie.
am playing with the idea of going to see susuk.. hmm..mebbe..
darn it..the boys lost the 1st set :(

"so emie, apa cerita?"
the question usually comes from friends/relatives who havent seen me for a while. (it usually comes after: "hey.. u've gained weight yah?" or "hmm.. kau dah gemuk nampak?")--> but that's for another blog, another time.
why dont i like it is simply cuz i i felt like i dont really have much to cerita .. my job's the same, the place i work's still the same, my car's still the same, my health's the same, my status is the same (status quo).
so yeah.. the only thing that's changed is actually my weight, but like i said, this is the 1st thing they would notice anyway.
so i would usually say "oh, same ol same ol..u know"..and would then proceed to cerita about other things, or other people...altho when i think about it again later, i actually do have my own cerita i can cerita, but being caught off guard most of the time kan.. the cerita just got lost i guess. hee. whatever.
so here's my cerita for today..after like ?2 months of not blogging, more like a catching-up lah kot:
forfar,nelson,here i come (again)
it's back to the books again for me. sigh.boringnye......next!
wimbledon
it has been a really interesting year in tennis so far.
rafa beat fedex to the british cup this year, preventing the fed a 6-yr streak at wimbledon, and possibly sending the guy to a depth of depression (hope not!) for making him lose another grand slam title this year!
the williams sisters made it to the finals again, with venus bringing home the trophy.
the M word
quite a number of friends got busy sending off wedding invitations this year. interestingly, few are actually doing it for the 2nd time already (!) so apparently the question they pose nowadays is this: "so emie, when are you gonna get married hah? so&so already twice now..haha...ha...ha"
sheesh *eyeroll*
the D word
quite a number of people i know are/have gotten divorced as well. seems there are soooo many diverse reasons behind the divorces nowadays. i dont think there are any actual risk factors to getting them anymore. the couple could be living together/living apart, no children/got children, great in-laws/crazy in-laws/even no in-laws, age difference/no age difference, love marriage/arranged marriage, fidelity/infidelity, married young/married late, good sex/bad sex/no sex, just married/golden anniversary,...and the list goes on...
well i guess there is one definite risk factor for getting a divorce then--> getting married!
the good ol days
attended my old boarding school's 25th anniversary. was fun. very nostalgic.
work frustations
the LJ,the shameless fabricator,the stoopidos,the red tape,the pointing fingers,the illness,the deaths,the feeling of helplessness.
euro o euro
france and italy didnt make it very far. but germany got to the finals tho they didnt win. but hey, they beat portugal- muahaha.
f1
kimi, massa, & hamilton are head-to-head at the standings, with kubica running (or driving rather ;)) really close behind. now that's what i call a race!
masters
no..not another sports tournament. rather the disastrous journey i decided to embark myself in order to (kononnye) get myself "specialized". sheessh. what was i thinking? i dont think i give a damn anymore.bah! i'm too damn lazy for it all already.
happy hair
yup. new hairstyle. splurged a bit on it. but not sorry that i did ;)
current reading
other than paeds lit? the book thief and two caravans.
movies
hancock- predictable
ironman-loved it!
wanted-uuhhmmm....mixed feelings about this one
13 games (thai movie)-gross.loved it.but gross.really.
kungfu panda-fairly enjoyable. the animated kungfu moves are kung-fu-fun.heh.
travel
NONE.
arrrrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

two movies, two books, and good tennis in between
will be missing the men's finals tho. am working sunday.
went to um for the masters orientation last week.
what the hell have i gotten myself into?
i was having palpitations each time one of the profs/lecturers there gave us a pep talk about what lays ahead for us in the coming 4 years.
o boy o boy o boy... soo looking fwd to evrything..NOT!
anyway, so i was back in kl for the orientation, and i went to midavalley 5 times in 4 days! movie, lunch, shopping alone, movie, shopping with mom, and dinner with the gals.
blades of glory was a riot. there were quite a number of laugh-out-loud moments. i enjoyed it.
waris jari hantu was a nice surprise. it wasnt scary at all, but that's not the surprising part, and shuhaimi baba probably didnt intend it to be anyway. it's sorta obviously a shuhaimi baba's movie, but neater and much better than pontianak harum. azean's character was quite funny while rusdi ramli showed his breakthru performance.
and it IS nadal's game!
he's so cute when he smiles.
btw, a great thing to watch in between the main players' matches is the wheelchair tennis. the players are just super awesome.
the only things i got from all those visits to midvalley were books. am still "banning" myself from buying any clothes and shoes. havent bought any new ones since december. am quite proud of myself for that. didnt think i have that sort of discipline in me. anyway, back to the books- i love "running with scissors" by augusten burroughs. i actually saw the movie 1st, and wasnt that impressed by it. but the book's excellent. burrough's a really funny guy with a really messed up, weird, messed up (didnt i just say that?) childhood. you keep forgetting that you're actually reading a memoir.
i'm in the midst of "i am muslim" by local author dina zaman. its a collection of columns that she wrote for malaysiakini.com, and she describes it as a selfish series of articles while she explores her religion (islam) and people. few of her observations become "eye-openers" for me, while others i have observed myself, at home here in malaysia, and abroad. her opinions are her opinions, but her book made me look at my own self in the mirror, and my own views of islam and muslims. other than the religious views, her experience and mostly funny points about being a 30-sth single malay muslim woman hit home quite often ;)
i also got a another non-fiction-ollie-but havent started on it yet.
it's almost 4am now. still not sleepy, but that's no surprise lah, considering i was so tired coming back from work today and slept from 6 to 10pm just now! hee. but gotta wake up early tomorrow so should still force my butt to bed.

favourite footballers
just thought i'd list down my favourite players for this year (they're in no particular order.. and the letters S, for skills, and L, for looks, simply explains why each one of them are on my list, and whether it's the skill or the looks that attracts more ;)):
-joe cole (S=L)
-michael ballack (S=L)
-luca toni (L>S)
-simao sambrosa (S>L)
-zidane (S>L)
-klose (S)
-beckham (L>S)
-fabio cannavaro (S=L)
-owen hargreaves (S>>L)
-freddie ljungberg (L>>>S)
-luis figo (S>>L)
-nesta (usually it's S=L, but since he's mostly on the bench this time, it's just L for now :))
-rio ferdinand (S)
-del pierro (S>L)
-lehmann (S)
-o'donkor (S)
-andriy schevchenko (L>S, seemed he didnt play his usually great self)
-arne friedrich (S=L)
-bastian schweinsteiger (S)
-sebastian kehl (S>L)
-cristiano ronaldo (S=L, but too bad he likes to play dirty!such an actor..)
-hidetoshi nakata (usually S=L too, but not too impressive this time around, so just L for him too)
-john terry (S>>L)
as for teams, germany was my most favourite for this year, followed by italy, france and england. for me, the best time was when brazil went out of the tournament. nothing against them but there was too much hu-hah about the team and how people were so confident that they would win again that got me un-interested. yes, i thought they were a pretty impressive team going into the tournament, but i was hoping for different teams to be in the finals this year, just for the sake of getting an unexpected ending, and it did, and that was great! (just like in the movies-lah.. for me,the predictable storylines suck the most).
and o-boy..zizou's exit? how unexpected was that? it was great and yet not-great at the same time!
and it was great to find out too, that at work, i wasn't the only one always groggy by mid afternoon from staying up for world cup.apparently quite a number of my colleagues (female ones!) actually follow the matches (and obviously players) too. there were also a few of them who actually woke up at 3am, (cuz they were supposed to wake their boyfriends/hubbies up)and ended up watching the games by themselves.. (cuz let's face it.. it ain't easy to disrupt a man's bedtime right?)
and btw, notice how ads/campaigns/cartoons in the media mostly depicted how "absorbed" the men were with the world cup that they leave the women "sleepless and lonely in bed", or "free to go shopping" (come on-lah, if you're in msia, where would you go at 3 am? sheesh..). i really think they should come up with different scenarios for the next world cup ads ;)
and yeah, to quote the men out there.."even tho the world cup's ended, there's always the EPL, the Spanish league, etc.." will be looking fwd to those, so i can get a glimpse of my favourite players in action again. ole!
